I liked the way the Chinese respected and treated their elders. I think we should try harder to do this here in our culture too. Wang Lung's uncle was a lazy and greedy man. Wang Lung did not like him that much and wished that the Chinese custom of paternal relatives living with their families did not exist. The only thing his uncle was good for was preventing a local group of marauding bandit ....
