The Battle Of Antietam
Part I of Essay
was one of the bloodiest battles in the
Civil War. It took place on September 17, 1862 in Maryland. It was at
once the climax and the end of the first Confederate invasion of the North.
It happened between the U.S. Army of the Potomac under Gen. George B.
McClellan and .... Part II of Essay .... had been left at Harper’s Ferry to supervise the surrender of the
garrison, was approching the battlefield. They came upon the flank of the
Union forces and drove them back.
At the end Confederate generals urged Robert E. Lee to retreat, but
he refused. At dawn, on the 18th, the army was still there inviting
attack. Although more then 10,000 additional Union troops reached the
battlefield McClellan made no move. Lee had had read McClellan’s mind, he
also knew his own men. He knew that his soldiers’ prestige and morale
would be stren ....
